Material Definitions:

Beater-Add
Beater-Add products address the sealing needs of automotive, air cooled engines and moderate duty industrial applications. The beater addition method is used to produce these homogenous products in roll form in a variety of gauges. (Frenzelit)

Buna-N
Buna-N is standard Nitrilerubber. It has excellent resistance to petroleum-based oils, fuels, water and alcohols. Nitrile also has good resistance to acids and bases, except those with a strong oxidizing effect. Nitrile rubber is the most commonly used for O-rings and other sealing devices.

Cloth Inserted Rubbers
A cloth inserted rubber is a rubber sheet with fabric impregnated in the rubber. Cloth inserted sheet material is designed to add stability where mechanical fastening is necessary, and to reduce gasket creep where heavy flange loading is required. The fabric helps reduce tearing when fastened.

Cork
Cork is composed of suberin, which is a hydrophobic substance that prevents water from penetrating. Cork composition offers a range of grades that are impermeable, buoyant, elastic, and fire resistant.

Cork & rubber
Cork-and-rubber offers the compressibility of cork with the flexibility of rubber to make an excellent sealing material. Cork-and-rubber can be cut easily, and because it is strong and flexible, it can be used for making gaskets with narrow flanges.

Duroid
A trademark composite material of ceramic and Teflon used as a microwave circuit substrate. Duroid is a non-metallic material. Common use is in electronic devices.

Glossary of Shielding Terms

Engineered Graphite
Engineered Graphite gaskets combine the positive properties of graphite and Kelvar. The material owes its excellent resistance to temperature and media to the high percentage of graphite and its high tensile strength to the Kelvar fiber used. (Frenzelit)

EPDM
EPDM is blended rubber, Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer, provides very good resistance to weathering, ozone and UV exposure. It is highly recommended for applications where the elastomer will have excessive exposure to the environment. It provides very good chemical resistance and dynamic properties.  E.P.D.M. blended material is considered a non-oil resistant material.

Felt
Felt is the material of choice for a wide range of "spacing" situations such as seals for bearings, spacers in automotive applications, and any other situation where a cushioning effect is desired between two rigid structures.  Washers and gaskets are also ideal for sealing out dust and similar contaminants as well as retaining lubricants.

Fish Paper
Fish Paper is a strong, flexible, fibrous paper. It resists moderate heat and mechanical injury. Intended for electrical applications involving high dielectric strength. Fish paper has good forming and bending qualities.

Foam
There are two types of structured foam material: open cell and closed cell.Open cell structured foams contain pores that are connected to each other and form an interconnected network which is relatively soft. Foam rubber is a type of open cell foam.Closed cell foams do not have interconnected pores. The closed cell structure foams have higher dimensional stability, low moisture absorption coefficients and higher strength.

Garlock
Sealing Technologies manufacturers Fluid Sealing Products, Sheet Gaskets, Expansion Joints, Metal Gaskets, Molded Rubber Seals

GPO-2
Foam GPO-2 is a flame retardant, rigid fiberglass reinforced plastic material used for general purpose electrical and/or mechanical applications where low cost is desired.GPO-2 is typically used in general purpose electrical insulation applications where flame-retardant material is required. It is a cost-effective choice for use with terminal boards, control panels, switch plates, and other similar applications.

G-9
Foam G-9-is a laminate sheet comprised of flame retardant melamine resin and woven fiberglass glass substrate.

Graphite- High Pressure, High Temperature
Graphite consists of high quality, expanded graphite and metal insert. Gaskets with an extremely high loading capacity result from the special manufacturing process. (Frenzelit)

Kapton
Kapton® type HN is a tough, aromatic polyimide film, exhibiting an excellent balance of physical, chemical, and electrical properties over a wide temperature range, particularly at unusually high temperatures.Kapton® polyimide film can be used in a variety of electrical and electronic insulation applications: wire and cable tapes, formed coil insulation, substrates for flexible printed circuits, motor slot liners, magnet wire insulation.

Klingersil
Produces a full range of sheet gasket materials. “Only asbestos replacements” or “non asbestos sheets”

Lexan
Lexan is the brand name for polycarbonate plastic. It is a thermoplastic used in many applications that require high impact strength, a large temperature service range, excellent electrical properties, and dimensional stability.

Modified & Expanded PTFE's
All purpose use in the chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, paper and food industries. (Frenzelit)

Mylar
Mylar is an extraordinarily strong polyester film with superior strength, heat resistance, and excellent insulating properties.

N8090
N-8090 is a type of rubber that has a latent cure nitrile butadiene rubber binder and reinforced cellulose fiber. It has excellent oil resistance, good sealing characteristics, and is intended for applications with short duration maximum.

Neoporene
Neoprene is the brand name for the chloroprene family of synthetic rubbers. It is used in a wide variety of applications, such as in wetsuits, laptop sleeves, orthopedic braces (wrist, knee, etc.), electrical insulation, liquid and sheet applied elastomeric membranes or flashings, and car fan belts.

Nomex
Nomex Data Sheet
Nomex is a registered trademark for flame resistant meta-aramid. The paper is used in electrical laminates such as circuit boards and transformer cores as well as fireproof honeycomb structures where it is saturated with a phenolic resin.

Non Asbestos
Non-Asbestos products are high density, high pressure gasket materials made by using multiple roll calendaring process. The balanced raw material combination of high quality aramid fibers, special fillers and binders. (Frenzelit)

Nylon
Nylon is a thermoplastic silky material. Nylon was the first commercially successful synthetic polymer. Solid nylon is used for mechanical parts such as machine screws, gears and other low- to medium-stress components previously cast in metal. Solid nylon is used in hair combs.

Plastic
Plastic is the general common term for a wide range of synthetic or semi-synthetic organic amorphous solid materials used in the manufacture of industrial products. Plastics are typically polymers of high molecular mass, and may contain other substances to improve performance and/or reduce costs.

Polyethylene
Polyethylene is a plastic material that is chemically resistant and can be very durable. It is the most widely used plastic.

Polypropylene
Polypropylene or polypropene is a thermoplastic. It is rugged and unusually resistant to many chemical solvents, bases and acids and to repetitive stress. It is the plastic most often used for lids and caps.

Polyurethane
Polyurethanes are used in high resiliency flexible foam seating, rigid foam insulation panels, microcellular foam seals and gaskets, durable elastomeric wheels and tires, automotive suspension bushings, electrical potting compounds, high performance adhesives and sealants, Spandex fibers, seals, gaskets, carpet underlay, and hard plastic parts.

Poron
PORON® is high density, flexible, microcellular urethane foam materials are manufactured by continuously casting and curing mechanically mixed formulas to the desired thickness.
Microcellular Urethane foams offer a broad range of design solutions for gasketing, sealing, vibration and sound dampening and energy absorption. Low compression set and low out gassing features makes these high performance foams ideal for applications in communications, automotive, electronic, and other industrial devices.

Commonly, Neoprene sponge is used for low pressure gaskets that require limited resealability. Works well in water, gas and oil applications

Teflon
Teflon is the brand name for polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).Neither water and water-containing substances nor oil and oil-containing substances are wet by PTFE. It has one of the lowest coefficients of friction against any solid. It is very non-reactive, partly because of the strength of carbon–fluorine bonds, and so it is often used in containers and pipe work for reactive and corrosive chemicals.
